Hi, My name is Ryan, I’ve been a maths tutor for the last couple years. I studied maths for my bachelors in the UK and I am applying to do a IT/ comp sci masters here in Hong Kong. I am looking to tutor maths at any level up to A levels/IB. I am very familiar with IGCSE and IAL mathematics having received an A* and A respectively when I attended Kellett.Outside of maths, I train a lot in swimming to keep fit and compete at competitions all the time.

My tutoring approach is to make sure to teach the students to have good fundamentals. Having a good foundation in maths is very important in order to move onto the next level especially when you get older. Individualising the sessions is also very important as each student have different needs and have varying paces of learning. I will also help students to get to a point where they are good enough to teach someone else on a topic, which shows that they understand it well.

Tutoring Experience

During covid, I was volunteering at RUN, a charity for refugees in Hong Kong, running their maths program. That was my first time teaching maths to a group of students of all ages, many of them needed help with basics such as percentages and solving simple equations because they did not have the opportunity to learn in the past. From this experience I found myself enjoying teaching others, and it’s why I’ve been tutoring since. I’ve also taught students from year 4 up to a GCSE level. With younger students it’s always important to be patient and make sure they can repeatedly solve problems well consistently to establish a good base. With older students it’s important to find areas that are lacking or else when things get harder it will be tough to keep up.
